Hydra: This is the name of an internal project carried out within YouTube to

speed up video loading times, and in the process, lower both user frustrations

and operating cost. Google Cloud is the key. It was reported by The Wall Street

Journal that the company used its parent s cloud computing infrastructure to split

video processing between  hundreds of thousands of machines  allowing them

to process video seven times faster than in 2008 (and even four times faster than

just six months ago).

Video Streaming: YouTube is going into a new territory of streaming live video

through a new channel called YouTube Live which intends to attract more

original content to the site and give users another reason to stay on longer. They

are preparing a hundred or so professionally produced new channels that the site

is going to premier over the next six months-a sort of YouTV which is part of a

larger strategy, designed by YouTube s Robert Kyncl and Salar Kamangar.

According to Forrester Research, by 2016 half of all households will have Wi-Fi-

enabled devices on their televisions, which will bring all those new channels into

the living room, tempting people to cancel their pricey cable subscriptions. The

only way for the networks and the cable companies to grow will be to buy Web-

based channels.
