Consistency and Standards

In contrast, this is where YouTube performs worst. Two examples are:
i) Navigation history is lost when the user logs into the system, so, for instance, the loss of videos
watched, quick lists, etc; and

ii) Comments are frequently chats between users, but as these are not presented over a linear, dated
logic, the context and understanding are mislaid.

Error Prevention

This guideline is not observed; for example, when watching a video in a channel page, a table of contents is shown, although every time the user clicks in any of the other videos, the user is directed to a standard page losing any previous contextual information. In order to re-access it, being obliged to use the back button.

Concerning this guideline, YouTube performs generally well, as it keeps the user informed about what the system is doing, by providing information about loading and total video times.
Match Between System and the Real World
This heuristic verifies to what extent the language of the interface respects the user s familiar language and concepts.

On the one hand the video controls, similar to domestic video players, respect real-world conventions, but on the other hand, there is a vast amount of unclear terminology and associated functions, such as: quicklists, featured videos or channel names.

User Control and Freedom

Copyright Infringement

Challenges
1. YouTube has a lot of issues with copyright infringement and
appropriateness of content.
2. Inappropriate content is an issue as school districts have started to block
access to the site to cut down cyber bullying.
3. Some governments prevent access to YouTube throughout entire nations
to limit access to some information and to protest content deemed as
offensive for moral or religious reasons.

Youtube’s core competency is video sharing. Prahalad and Hamel offer the following tests to identify the firm's core competencies:
  1. Is it a significant source of competitive differentiation?
I believe that there is a significant competitive differentiation between YouTube and its competitors such as Vimeo, Hulu, Youku, Tudou  etc. Google’s acquisition of YouTube for $1.65billion first helped to kill off most of their competitors. It broadened their popularity worldwide which meant that more people would continue to contribute and watch YouTube. According to market trackers at Hitwise, YouTube has a 45% share on the online video market which is more than its top four competitors combined.
Does it provide a unique signature to the organization?
YouTube is not unique with its technology but the experience and execution it provides a unique video sharing method that enables:
  • Usability
  • Community
  • Social network accessibility
Heuristic evaluation is a usability evaluation technique which allows experts to critique an interface by verifying its agreement with general and simple heuristics or principles, such as clarity, consistency or fluidity of navigation. YouTube’s usability was audited following the list of the ten Nielsen’s recommended heuristics for usable interface design.
General evaluation is shown by a positive, negative, present but unsatisfactory.

Technology Sourcing and Internal Innovation

Product Development

Our goal is to allow every person on the planet to participate by making the upload process as simple as
placing a phone call. This new video content will be available on any screen  in your living room, or on
your device in your pocket. YouTube and other sites will bring together all the diverse media which matters
to you, from videos of family and friends to news, music, sports, cooking and much, much more
 "
Hydra: This is the name of an internal project carried out within YouTube to
speed up video loading times, and in the process, lower both user frustrations
and operating cost. Google Cloud is the key. It was reported by The Wall Street
Journal that the company used its parent s cloud computing infrastructure to split
video processing between  hundreds of thousands of machines  allowing them
to process video seven times faster than in 2008 (and even four times faster than
just six months ago).
 "
Video Streaming: YouTube is going into a new territory of streaming live video
through a new channel called YouTube Live which intends to attract more
original content to the site and give users another reason to stay on longer. They
are preparing a hundred or so professionally produced new channels that the site
is going to premier over the next six months-a sort of YouTV which is part of a
larger strategy, designed by YouTube s Robert Kyncl and Salar Kamangar.
According to Forrester Research, by 2016 half of all households will have Wi-Fi-
enabled devices on their televisions, which will bring all those new channels into
the living room, tempting people to cancel their pricey cable subscriptions. The
only way for the networks and the cable companies to grow will be to buy Web-
based channels.
